The Costa Rica South Pacific Region begins at the town of Dominical and runs to the boarder of Panama. The South Pacific is by far the most diverse and secluded area in the country. It is an adventure and nature lover?s haven. In this region you can explore the Corcovado National Park at the tip of the Osa Peninsula or the Piedras Blancas National Park near Golfito. Or if you are up for an underwater exploration, check out Cano Island for some great diving or snorkeling near Ballena Marine National Park. The surf town of Dominical calls to backpackers and surfers. This secluded beach is a little less crowded then some near other towns. Further down the coast you will come across Uvita, a very small town without much in terms of tourist attractions but there are a couple of smaller lodges and B&Bs along the coast. The main attraction in Uvita is the Ballena National Marine Park one of Costa Rica?s newest national parks and one of only two marine parks.
If you wish to experience the Osa Peninsula you can fly into Drake Bay and enjoy the Peninsula on the Pacific side or you can fly into Puerto Jimenez and try the lodges on the far tip of the peninsula. Here you will find a variety of lodges from budget to high-end.
Travelling by car, you can travel up and into the mountains and all the way to the Chirripo National Park, the highest point in Costa Rica at 3,820 metres above sea level. Here you can enjoy amazing views of the ocean below and incredible day and overnight hikes. There is also great climbing in the high reaches of the park.
The temperature in the South Pacific can vary due to the diverse topography of the region. The lowlands near the Osa Peninsula enjoy warm and humid days with rain in the afternoon. You will see more rain here then elsewhere in the country. But up in the mountains and especially around Chirripo you will find much cooler temperatures as well as a good amount of rain in the rainy season.
