The region of Costa Rica Puntarenas & the Gulf of Nicoya fairly diverse, containing the sleepy beach towns along the Nicoya Peninsula, the islands of the gulf (some of which are inhabited), and the port city of Puntarenas. Puntarenas hosts cruise ships as well as cargo ships and other industry. The town is the departure site for the ferry across to the Paquera on the Nicoya Peninsula.
On the Nicoya Peninsula there are three major tourist destinations. The first is the area of Tambor which is a large all inclusive resort areas. There is also the town of Montezuma and further up the coast is the town of Mal Pais. Montezuma and Mal Pais are sleepy fishing towns. The beaches in and around these towns are beautiful and offer excellent surfing. The towns also offer a relaxed nightlife, lots of local attractions and activities, and a variety of budget and boutique hotels.
This region enjoys hot temperatures throughout the year with little if any rain through the months of December - March. You will see more rain in the September ? November.
